What is the Clinic?
Comprising of two senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons, Mr Philip Mitchell and Mr Simon Bridle, a research nurse, junior doctors and three personal assistants, the Hip Clinic is organised to provide a comprehensive service to all patients with hip problems. At St Georges hospital, the largest Teaching Hospital in the United Kingdom, National Health service patients can be seen promptly following referral from their General Practitioner. At St Georges Hospital we have a complete range of diagnostic facilities available and we offer all patients with hip problems appropriate care, from the most straightforward first time hip replacement to the most complex of revision hip procedures. We particularly specialise in the treatment of complex primary hip problems, infected total hip replacement and revision hip procedures associated with major bone loss.
Where are we?
We at the Hip Clinic also practise at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (Epsom), Ravenscourt Park Hospital (Hammersmith), Parkside Hospital (Wimbledon), St Anthony’s Hospital (Cheam) and Ashtead Hospital (Surrey). Private patients can be seen at all of the above hospitals, except the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Hospital. Private Patients can make appointments to see either Mr Mitchell or Mr Bridle by contacting the relevant secretary or hospital. Referrals should come from either your General Practitioner or from another hospital consultant.
Our Philosophy
All patients seen at the Hip Clinic can expect the highest standard of modern orthopaedic care. We are committed to scientific research and development and have published many leading articles in the field of hip surgery. Both Mr Mitchell and Mr Bridle regularly feature on the faculty of major international hip surgery meetings and host annually London’s premier Revision Hip Surgery meeting – The St Georges Revision Hip Meeting. This is now in it’s fifth year and draws a major international faculty and delegates from all over Europe. All patients who require surgery can expect the very best in standards. We use tried and tested implants with established track records, in accordance with nationally agreed guidelines (NICE, National Institute for Clinical Excellence). Our private practice totally reflects our NHS practice and we perform no procedures in the private sector that we do not perform regularly in the health service. We are committed to audit, follow-up and clinical governance. Our patients can expect a very low complication rate and a high degree of clinical satisfaction. E have evidence that proves this.
The Team Approach
At the hip clinic we believe communication and teamworking are essential to optimise the outcome for our patients. That is why our secretarial team, our nurses and junior staff are an integral part of our unit. To further maximise performance, Mr Mitchell and Mr Bridle will commonly operate together when dealing with our most challenging problems. There is no doubt that in very complex situations, patients will do better when they are operated on by 2 senior surgeons. This is a philosophy that exists in most of the leading hip reconstruction units in the world. We also have very close links with world leading hip trauma surgeons, such as Mr Martin Bircher of St Georges Hospital, with children’s hip surgeons and with a colleague who specialises in hip arthroscopy, Mr Marcus Bankes of Guy’s hospital. We also play a leading role in the London Hip Group, a forum for all the hip surgeons in London to discuss difficult and challenging problems.
