Total Hip Replacement is one of the surgical success stories of the 20th Century. With the advent of safe anaesthetic techniques and reliable implants the lives of thousands of patients with degenerative hip conditions have been changed for the better. In the United Kingdom we now perform more than 60,000 total hip replacements per year and more than 40,000 total knee replacements for knee arthritis. A successful total hip replacement will relieve pain, improve function, allow for improved sleep and generally lead to a greatly improved quality of life. This improvement can be expected to last for up to 30 years now, when gold standard prostheses are implanted by the most experience surgeons.
A similar success story is now emerging for revision hip surgery. When total hip replacements fail (for many different reasons) specialised techniques and implants have been developed to reconstruct bone defects and get patients back to a high level of function with minimal pain once again.
